We Are Only Human

I felt compelled this morning to expound on my previous blog. Particularly this statement:

“and here it comes, my pet peeve cliché’ Yes, but we’re only human. Ugh I hate that one. We are only human, but so was Jesus.” Written 9/19/08.

God showed me something this weekend I want to share. (He gave me a lesson on writing, he is so awesome.)

As I mediate on that statement I realize that I wasn’t clear to what my actual thoughts are regarding that statement. I very clearly emphasize that it is a pet peeve but I am not clear as to why. As an aspiring writer, I need to take what is clear in my head about a subject and convey it on paper in a way that there is no confusion to the reader. That statement of course made perfect sense to me. I am in the early stages of writing so I know I have so much to learn, I am only human you know.

So without further ado.

We Are Only Human

When the statement “We are only human,” is a pet peeve of mine is when it becomes an excuse for sinning.

“Oh I know I lost my temper, but I’m only human.”

“I know I shouldn’t have gone home with that guy, but I’m lonely, what’s a girl to do, I’m only human.”

I actually knew someone that used that excuse about as often as I took a drink of water. That is probably why it became a pet peeve. It wasn’t something I thought that much about until I met her.

Being human is not our license to execute bad judgment. Being human isn’t the excuse to cover all of our sins.

Being human does give us the license to call on God for everything. Yes Jesus was human however he spent more time in prayer and solitude with God than he did out and amongst the people. Jesus knew he needed a close relationship with his father to fulfill his purpose on this earth. Just as we do, without a close connection with our father, we will never fulfill our purpose or reach our potential.

Being human is an excuse to call on Jesus to cover all of our sins. He went to the cross to cover sin. He brought us into the family of God, so we can commune with him. He gave us the opportunity to have the same relationship with our father that he had. Wow! Meditate on that for awhile. It is a wonderful revelation!

I have stopped relying on my own wisdom, on my own ability to love, on my own strength because I am only human. I look to Jesus to cover all of my weaknesses, so I can be more like him and when I fail to look to him because my pride or stubbornness rears its ugly head, I repent because yes, I am only human, and I lift my voice in thanksgiving because I have a God that walked in my shoes and he personally knows what it is to be “only human.”

Scripture reference:
Luke 2:52
Luke 4:1-12(Jesus used Gods word to come against the devil-he wouldn’t have known Gods word had he not studied it thoroughly getting it into his head and into his heart.)
Luke 5:16

I love this! (and yes, I'm finally now catching up). Are you doing okay? I hadn't seen you on BWU in a while.

I couldn't agree more. We use "I'm only human" to avoid taking responsibility for our actions, for our words, for our tempers. Strange thing is, every time that thought comes to mind, I get even angrier, though the anger turns from defiance to self-afflicted verbal abuse. And that of course leads to wanting to scream and going hog crazy for want of a better idea of how to deal with the frustration. It's funny what you can learn when you stop looking at others fully, and adding yourself to the picture. You may not be exactly alike, but often you find their flaws as ways to see your own. Well done Theresa!

Ooohhh, it sounds like the Holy Spirit inside of you, dear Child of the most high, takes issue with this "pet peeve" you identify as yours. So he should. It is, for a born again child of the Most high God, an untruth. For if we have been born of God then we can no longer be “only human” for His divine nature has birthed us into His heavenly and holy family. Yes, we do still live in the flesh but our old sin nature has been crucified with Christ, according to Romans 6, and we are risen with Him in His resurrection. Therefore we are no longer bound to live unto the flesh, our human “nature” because He LIVES IN us. It is a matter of which master we choose, time after time, to obey. If we submit ourselves unto righteousness through the power of Jesus’ Holy Spirit now residing within our hearts and “put to death the deeds of the flesh” then we become slaves of righteousness and little by little, step by step and choice by choice, we as individuals become a “good tree that cannot bring forth bad fruit.” It takes a renewing of our mind and an awareness that we have not only been forgiven but we’ve been cleansed from ALL unrighteousness and we have no obligation to yield ourselves to unrighteousness any longer! How sweet is that!!!!!!

Scriptural References:

II Corinthians 5:16-18,21 says, "Wherefore henceforth know we no man (whose been born again) after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we Him no more. Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away: behold, all things are become new….For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.
I Corinthians 3:2-3. “I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”
II Pet. 1:3-4. Says, “According as His divine power hath given unto us ALL things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that in the world through lust.”

Incidentally, we do have a responsibility to work out what He’s worked in which is the way we are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. II Pet. 1:9 says that if all of the preceding items, such as virtue, knowledge, temperance (self-control), patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity (love) of which we are to add to our faith after we’ve been born again, starting in verse 5, are lacking within our lives then we’ve forgotten, even to the point of being blind or at least short sighted, that we’ve been forgiven (purged) from our old sins.

Because we do still live on this earth in human form it indeed poses a great necessity for us to rely on Jesus within us to make the right decisions and to empower us to "present your bodies a living sacrifice HOLY and ACCEPTABLE unto God which is your REASONABLE service." Romans 12:1 and to "be NOT CONFORMED TO THE WORLD BUT BE YE TRANSFORMED BY THE RENEWING OF YOUR MIND, THAT YE MAY PROVE WHAT IS THAT GOOD AND ACCEPTABLE AND PERFECT WILL OF GOD." verse 2.

In order for others to find strength and encouragement to surrender their all to Jesus Christ it takes us living out what He has birthed into us to show them the power of His Holy Spirit to change each one who will surrender and depend on Him to live in them the life of righteousness, peace and joy which is what the Kingdom of Heaven is made up of according to Romans 14:17. May we rise up, in His strength within us, and follow Him that others might see and seek redemption and salvation in a God who has already provided everything we need that "pertains to life and godliness." Yeah!
